Process: 

      After choosing the type of project that you would like to develop, choose the environmental issue/issues that you will focus on.  Here you may find links that can provide some information, however, you also have to make your own online research. 

  • You need to create a "Resources" section for your project, and you need to list at least 6 materials (links/websites) that you used in order to acquire more knowledge about your topic. 

 

Remember that you only have to select ONE of the three options from the task page.  

Environmental Issues

Water Pollution - General worry over water pollution and associated environmental issues concern more than half of all Americans. Many water sources like streams, rivers, and oceans are getting polluted.

Air Pollution -  Air pollution is becoming an increasingly dangerous problem, particularly in heavily-populated cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has found that 80% of people living in urban areas are exposed to poor air quality levels.  Animals, as well as humans, are also at risk of developing a number of health problems due to air pollution.

Loss of Biodiversity -  Biodiversity refers to the totality of genes, species, and ecosystems in a defined area, and biodiversity loss is becoming a bigger problem than we ever thought it could be. It's estimated that half of all the species on the planet could go extinct by 2050 — only 30 years from now.

Endangered species -   There are thousands of species of animals and plants that are seriously at risk of extinction, and according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, we are now losing animal species at more than 1,000 times the “normal” rate.  

 

 

Contamination of Drinking Water - Contamination of freshwater used for household needs, including pollution of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, ranks top on the list of environmental concerns for 61% of Americans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set standards to ensure the quality of drinking water to protect public health by limiting levels of various contaminants like microorganisms, and disinfectants among others.

Deforestation-  It is estimated that 15 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation. Cutting down trees also threatens animals and humans who rely on healthy forests to sustain themselves, and the loss of tropical rainforests is particularly concerning because around 80 percent of the world’s species reside in these areas. About 17 percent of the Amazon rainforest has been cut down in the past 50 years to make way for cattle ranching. That is an unpleasant event for the climate because cattle flatulence is a major source of methane gas, which contributes more to short term climate change than carbon emissions.

Global Warming & Climate Change- The planet is warming, from the North Pole to the South Pole since 1906, and the global average surface temperature has increased by more than 1.6 degrees.  This has a tremendous impact and several consequences for the environment and for our lives.

Overexploitation of Natural Resources - Natural resources are those that our planet offers us without the need for human intervention. They are essential for survival, but if they are consumed at a faster rate than their natural regeneration, as is currently the case, they can be exhausted.

**This is also known as the depletion of natural resources and overharvesting.  You can also focus on overfishing if you wish. **
